Likely an areal word, spanning Tai, Tibeto-Burman, and Sinitic languages (see discussion in Schuessler 2007:376, entry for 帽). Indeed, ostensible attestations of the current etymon in Burmish languages (included here for comparison) may reflect relatively recent borrowings from Tai, rather than true reflexes of a PTB root. Interestingly also, we see no evidence for reflexes of the current etymon among Loloish languages, with the possible exception of Kucong.
